K's Review

PLUR 4 was nothing like I expected. Having been to previous outdoor parties such as 5 Dollas Make Ya Holla I was expecting something possibly in a forest. The event ended up being held in the desert somewhat near Edwards Airforce Base in the Lancaster, CA area. After getting incredibly lost in the middle of the desert with not much gas in my tank and no mobile phone coverage, I can safely say that my night did not start off well. Apparently I wasn't the only one lost though! Within moments of me starting to freak out about being lost and stuck, other kids who were on their way to the event found me and had me join them so we could all search for the event together. After some discussion about who had driven where already one guy decided that he knew where we needed to go, so we all hopped in our vehicles and played follow the leader. Thankfully the guy was right and we ended up getting to the event 5 minutes before I was supposed to go on.

As I got to the "security checkpoint" I was told all the timeslots had been pushed back 3 hours so I had time to relax and start feeling better. I drove to the designated parking area and got out to explore the venue. It was a nice desert plot in the middle of nowhere with hills surrounding us on most all sides; kind of a hidden valley. There weren't many partykids there yet, but I would later find out that was due to major traffic delays coming from LA, a holdup at the restaurant where the map point was located, and people just getting lost in the desert.

I spent a good deal of time talking with YoYo and some of the KOTC crew until I was asked if I would relieve the deejay. Apparently Megaman had been playing for no less than 3 hours and was out of tracks. I grabbed my records and hopped on the decks. The mixer was one of those mixers that isn't able to do good transitions even if you turn off all the scratching settings and I unable to get any good transitions out during the 30 miutes I was playing. About that time Hi-C was ready to hop on and asked if I was done. I didn't realize I had only been spinning for 30 mins so I put on one last track and hopped off.

As I was taking my records back to my car, one of the partykids asked why I had played such a short set. I was still oblivious to the fact that I had only played for 30 minutes since I was so caught up in trying to figure out how to do anything worthwhile with the mixer the whole time I was spinning. I was later told that I would be going on again later to finish my set. Around that time some friends had arrived and we setup a tent and drank some tasty powerade. I have to mention that the sky looked amazing from where we were. You could see every little star and even the band of the Milky Way! It was breathtaking. After admiring the sky for some time and hanging out with some people I realized I was a bit tired, so I decided to take a short nap.

I woke up to the soothing sounds of hardcore tracks being slammed back and forth and got up to see who was spinning. I'm still not sure who the guy was, but he was just rocking the hardcore and everyone was eating it up! Energy has finished up at the map point and showed up as I was standing watching the hardcore madness. He told me I would be going on next to finish up my set, so I went to my car and grabbed my records.

The hardcore guy put on one last track and I decided to play something fun since my first set left much to be desired as far as transitions went. As his track wound down I threw on one of my favorite tracks- Silent George! If you haven't heard this track, there really isn't any music and the whole time this girl is pretty much getting it on with this guy who you never hear and lots of XXX action happens and everyone listening is always like WTF! So the crowd was standing there looking at me like WTF and I was just laughing 'cause I love this track and they are all confused and not sure what to do. It was about 3am at this point and right about then all the cars that were stuck heading up from LA were just getting to the party. As George was finsishing up I brought in the first happycore track of my second set using the gain knobs and it worked beautifully. The crowd started dancing and all the people that had just arrived joined in. It couldn't have worked out better!

So here I was spinning set number 2 with a much larger crowd and newfound knowledge on how to actually make transitions sounds good with the mixer I had come to dislike very much. The set was awesome - I played lots of my favorite tracks and really got the transitions sounding good! By the time I was done I was feeling a million times better and I was being followed by no one other than YoYo :)

YoYo threw down pretty much every track that I wanted to play but either didn't have or didn't have time for. His set was on and I was dancing and having a great time. The vibe was really pumping with all the late-comers finally there and everyone looked to be having a blast. The sunrise began and it was beautiful with the happycore soundtrack to boot! En3rgy went on as the sunrise was taking full effect and he played a lot of rand0m stuff. I stayed to hear some of the last set, but figured I should hit the road since I didn't want my records melting.

For a night that started off pretty bad, it turned out to be an incredibly beautiful event with a vibe that you don't find so much anymore. Thanks to En3rgy for bringing me out and to KOTC and all the wonderful people in attendance for a great time!
