Fifty-ONE years ago... Disneyland's 51st!

on july 17, 2006, disneyland celebrated it's 51st birthday, but to the normal day guests i'm sure it seemed like a just another day in the park... see, the 50th celebration (for last year's big birthday) was planned as an 18-month event... and since we're only in the 14th month or so the celebration is apparently still "kicking into high gear!" that pretty much means all the 50th stuff is still up and will continue to be up for a few more months... but to us diehard lovers of disneyland, this wasn't just another day in the 50th celebration and we were bound and determined to let others know :)

since we didn't know what to expect, i went ahead and scheduled a micechat drinkup the night before the 17th just like i did last year... a decent group showed up at the two drinkup meets i made it to, but it was nothing like the out of control madness that ensued last year... between the drinkup meets, we headed over to the camelot hotel (formerly the park inn international) next to the infamous mcdonalds out on harbor so we could enjoy the fireworks from afar and chill with our lounge of tomorrow friends... the fireworks show proved to be quite the amusement since we couldn't hear the soundtrack from where we were and all ended up contributed to a nice group acapella version of the soundtrack...after much more drinking and madness, leigh-ann, joe, matt, and i headed back to our hotel room to rest up for the day ahead... our hotel room came with a blacklight mounted between the beds (see photo below - our blacklight) and had glow in the dark stars painted on the ceiling... very odd and entertaining!

in the morning i made a quick run to mcdonald's and a took a short swin in the hotel pool... afterwards, we got ready for action and headed over to disneyland :) we actually made it to the noon hub meet before everyone dispersed and i collected a bunch of people's annual passes (see photo below -me holding the passes) to go get our space mountain fastpasses which we would be using later on in the evening... the day proved to be quite hot and humid and we finally gave in and headed over to DCA to hop on GRR and cool down... by the time we got into DCA, put our stuff in lockers, and got through the line to board our raft thingie the sky had darkened, a breeze began blowing, and some rain started coming down... GRR was amusing and we all got pretty soaked... at this point i was dead tired and all i wanted to do was head to a hotel room and sleep... but instead, we got in line for TOT... (see photo below - us on tower) after TOT my wishes came true as we headed over to the lounge of tomorrow suite...

(more to this story coming later today including the exciting *ONE* adventures to promote aweness of disneyland's 51st!)

be sure to check out leigh-ann's photos - she's got a bunch of the lounge of tomorrow suite and stuff ;)

MiceChat DrinkUp: Mission 2

as most of you know, i am a total disney dork! i belong to several disney park-related sites and enjoy keeping up on the rumors and happenings at disneyland and the other disney parks around the world... one of these sites/communities i belong to is micechat... as a proud disney dork, i knew that most everyone who is in love with the parks would be at disneyland on july 17th to celebrate disneyland's 50th birthday... with that in mind, i also figured most everyone would be staying there the night before, making a perfect time for a meetup! and what better place to meet up, then at a bar? how about meeting at 3 bars?! so i organized the "micechat drinkup: mission 2" for the night of the 16th! mission 1 was back on may 4th when we were all at the park for the kickoff of the 18-month long 50th celebration and it was quite a fun experience with highlights including the tower of terror: disneyland hotel edition... and the 2nd drinkup was no disappointment! with meetups at tortilla jo's, the uva, and the lost bars, we were pretty lit by the end of the evening- only to nap and head over to line up to get into disneyland in the morning!

Disneyland's 50th Kickoff

05-05-05 marked the beginning of the 18 month long celebration of disneyland's 50th anniversary, and leigh-ann and i were there to take part in the festivities! :) for us it all started out on may 4th at the lost bar... after finding out that our hotel reservations were incorrectly entered into the computer, we were sure the next few days would have their share of problems- luckily nothing drastically got in the way of our fun... around 10:30pm, we met up with other members of the micechat message board for the first offical "micechat drinkup" which i somehow managed to organize... the micechat group is a wild bunch and we had a great time with all of them... mamabot gave us a great tour of the disneyland hotel since neither leigh-ann nor myself had really ventured over there before... after a few drinks, we rode tower of terror: disneyland hotel edition! basically it was a bunch of us drunk jumping in the elevator making it shake and then screaming for dear life... this occurred on both the ride up and down... after a few hours of amusement, we decided to call it a night... we would have to be up early the next morning to get in line so a nice rest sounded good...

may 5th... what a day! we woke up around 5:30am and i got ready and headed over to disneyland around 6:30 to get my ticket for the day... see, my annual passport expired on april 25th, and my renewal got all screwed up and i didn't recieve my new passport in the mail before i left vegas... so to get in to the park, i had to wait in the ticket line and get an "i forgot my pass" ticket each day i wanted to get into the parks... luckily that inconvenience was a lot less burdonsome than i had imagined and i ended up with 3 of the 50 collectible admission tickets i would have otherwise never gotten :) anyways, back to my story... so i left the hotel around 6:30am by myself as leigh-ann didn't really need to be there to wait in the ticket line... as i was heading towards disneyland, i spotted 3 people across the street who were obviously headed to disneyland as well... 2 girls and a guy, the guy had golden mickey ears on... so i continued walking an eventually ended up behind these 3... as it turns out, the guy was jonno! jonno is a friend who leigh-ann and i met through our myspace disneyland group and we had ended up hanging out at the parks together on previous trips... as we approached the esplanade (now called the "entrance plaza" since people aren't educated enough to know what an esplanade is), we saw something quite unique... the line to get through the security checkpoints stretched almost all the way back to harbor blvd! that's a crazy big line! as i was about to comment on the line, jonno suggested i stay with him since he had friends up near the front of the line... he wasn't lying! when we finally got in line we were only maybe 100 people or so back from the front of the line... around 7am, they started letting people in... it was craziness! the news was filming people running to save a good place in line to get into the park... i, on the other had, needed to wait for a ticket booth to open, so no good spot in line for me...

omg this is a long story... i will have to finish writing it later... i guess just enjoy the pix 'til i finish the story ;)

also be sure to check out leigh-ann's photos on ravingseraph.com! she really took a lot more awesome pix than i did!

things are looking up at disneyland! a lot of stuff for the 50th is starting to come together and it's looking nice! leigh-ann and i got to ride the new buzz lightyear ride a few times and it's awesome! it's a bit shorter than florida's, but the guns aren't directly attached to the ride vehicles, so you can actually aim! and the guns light up green when you hit something so you know it was you when you set off the volcano :)

a lot of people from our disneyland myspace group met up with us around 7pm and it was awesome :) hi becky, sam, laurie beth, greg, and jonno! also patrick, beth, and tammi! w00t!

leigh-ann and i ventured out to cali yet again to fully experience this year's holidays at disneyland, and despite the problems we had getting stuff like honey popcorn and snickerdoodle cookies, we had a good time! (thanx for the turkey legs rebecca!) the hightlight of the weekend occurred following saturday night's "believe... in holiday magic" fireworks extravaganza... what we originally thought to be the smoke from the fireworks coming down and engulfing the magic kingdom turned out to be an awesome fog that made for some very awesome sights and some very awesome photos! check out these shots!

also be sure to check out leigh-ann's photos from our trip!

Knott's Scary Farm

after a disasterous visit to last year's halloween haunt at knott's scary farm, leigh-ann and i decided to plan our trip for earlier in the month as to avoid the crowds... since we booked our tickets for a weekday and had picked up discount coupons at burger king (damn, we're getting good at this!). our tickets were only $25 a piece! that's half price! since we had gotten such a discount, we decided to also get the special buffet dinner in the park that started before the park opened for the evening... we were all excited because we knew we would, for the first time, be able to get in early and get a lot done without rushing too much... but as things worked out, traffic got in our way and we ended up at the park as it was opening... parking sucked! two full lots later, when we finally gota spot and rushed to the v.i.p. entrance... when we finally got in to the park and sat down to eat, we both sighed the biggest sigh ever... even though we didn't make it in as early as we wanted, we were indeed hours earlier than we had ever arrived in previous years...

after a good dinner and a nice glass of red wine, we ventured off into the park! with such little crowds we managed to get on both the mine ride and the flume which were both made up with scary stuff for the haunt... before we got on the flume we stopped by the hanging stage where we heard such halloween classics as "clastrophobic sting" by the prodigy (my favorite), and of course the absolute king of scary tunes, "don't stop" by atb... (hahahhhahaha wtf!) the flume was really neat, but it killed leigh-ann's bangs... after a few minutes in the restroom, she emerged with bangs pulled back, and we were ready to get back on our way... i noticed it was time for the hanging to begin, so we headed over that way... we watched the hanging, which is one of my favorite parts of the whole knott's scary farm experience, and it was hilarious as always... i still can't believe the things they get away with saying and doing in that show... it even had the fanta girls!!! so amusing... then we headed over to the pirate maze, which is an aweful place to be-headed... (hahahaha jungle cruise pun intended!) we then met up with patrick, and then with tim and crew...

after grabbign a bite to eat, we went through the 3d clown maze, which is by far my favorite! then jack decided it was time to take a trip back in time on the dinosaur ride... if we had to hear "we're going back in time" one more time i was going to kill someone! the ride of course broke down in the ice age and all i could say was "we're stuck in the effing ice age and i don't even have my jacket with me!" i was so freaking cold... and that bear or whatever it was would not swallow the leaf it was trying to eat for anything! ten minutes and the bear was still on that same leaf... anyways, we finally made it back to the present time and headed over to my second favorite maze, 3d "malice in wonderland!" we ended up seeing the hanging again and i really wanted to make it through the other 3d maze they had in the swamp area, but our group had other plans... even so, i had a great time and i took a bunch of pictures! the pictures are mostly from the 3d mazes, so if you have the 3d glasses that have clear lenses, look at the pix through those 'cause it looks crazy!!!

i know some of you may not see this as related to art at all, but like all of tim burton's films, nightmare before christmas has very unique look to it... the look of the movie is as cartoony as it is gothic and is still very popular in today's pop culture... the movie is so cool that it even made it's way into an attraction at disneyland! starting in the first week of october, disneyland's famous haunted mansion opens it's doors as the "haunted mansion holiday" the idea is that jack visits the haunted mansion and gives it an "an ex-scream makeover" or so says the disneyland website... basically the entire atrration is redecorated from the ground up to celebrate a scary rather than merry christmas- complete with scarols! leigh-ann and i attended the awesome opening event this year and we took tons of pictures to share with you! be sure to check out both my pictures (below) and leigh-ann's pictures! enjoy!
